Your Funding Options
If you wish to fund the important work of SVA, you have four options:
Venture Fund SVA Fund Capital Fund Intellectual Property Fund

Venture Fund

Funding Minimum: $20,000 per annum
Time Commitment: 3 years ($60,000 in total)

The Venture Fund provides capacity funding support to the organisations and strategic projects in our venture portfolio.

SVA channels 80 per cent of each contribution to the Venture Fund directly to our portfolio. The remaining 20 per cent goes to SVA to cover the capacity building services we provide, including a dedicated staff member to assist each venture with daily activities, mentoring support, strategic planning, performance measurement and introductions to SVA’s networks. These services are integral to the venture’s ability to mature, maximise efficiency, scale and become sustainable.

Key to measuring impact and ensuring accountability from capacity funding is a long term relationship. SVA requests a three year funding commitment from Venture Fund investors. This commitment ensures that SVA and our venture portfolio have a reliable funding stream for future planning.

SVA decides where the funding from SVA’s Venture Fund is allocated based on the current needs and activities of the portfolio. If investors contributing to SVA’s Venture Fund have a particular area of interest within the portfolio, they can request that their funding be applied to either specific ventures in SVA’s portfolio or preferred focus areas.

SVA investment – why 20 per cent?

Social entrepreneurs must manage complex organisations, often negotiating the competing interests of staff, boards and other stakeholders.

By committing more than just funding, SVA protects and leverages your philanthropic investment with highly skilled assistance. We help ventures become more effective and ensure every dollar invested generates a social return worth more than that dollar.

But leveraging learnings, experiences and relationships takes time and money. The 20 per cent fee enables us to provide high quality support to the ventures we back. It meets part, but far from all, of the costs associated with:

arrow selecting portfolio ventures that meet the requirements of philanthropists
arrow engaging senior corporate mentors
arrow managing the funder/venture relationship
arrow applying our organisational tools and evaluation metrics
arrow preparing comprehensive venture performance reports every six months.

These activities are fundamental to SVA’s efforts to raise the bar on accountability and evaluation in the social sector. By applying sound investment principles to philanthropy, we add value to your social investment.

SVA Fund

Funding Minimum: No minimum
Time Commitment: One off or periodically

Funders interested in sustaining and enhancing the quality of SVA’s efforts, leveraging their support and adding value to our organisation can allocate their funding directly to support SVA’s model.

SVA’s model is unique, simple and it works. It is based on a solid foundation of robust systems, professional and dedicated people and an extensive support network.

Our capacity is just as important as that of the ventures we support. We have dedicated considerable time and resources to ensuring we are well-structured, with sufficient systems for effectiveness, efficiency and strong growth.

SVA comprises respected professionals from the non-profit sector complimented by highly experienced staff from the corporate world. The diversity of experience and intellect of our people enable us to provide a wide breadth of services to the social sector.

Without partnerships, we can’t spread solutions. SVA has formed various councils and advisory panels that bring together influential experts from outside of SVA to help guide and inform us on funding endeavours, investment strategies, service offerings and prevailing issues within those areas of society that we focus on helping.

Capital Fund

Funding Minimum: $10,000
Time Commitment: One off or periodically

Without a permanent capital base to draw from, SVA must continually raise new funds to support our work. While this type of ‘hand to mouth’ existence is not unique to SVA, it does pose risks to the stable, thoughtful and strategic way we work.

SVA’s Capital Fund is a segregated and professionally invested pool of money. Earnings from the investments go to support the ongoing work of SVA while the capital remains invested in perpetuity.

Investors who are interested in supporting the long term security and viability of SVA’s model can direct their financial support to the Capital Fund. For further information about how the Capital Fund works, please download this separate, more expansive Capital Fund brochure.

Research & Development Fund

Funding Minimum: $100,000
Time Commitment: Tailored

In our effort to continually showcase best practice learning to the non-profit sector, SVA has developed key capabilities in:
arrow designing and delivering practical educational tools
arrow providing consulting services
arrow conducting fresh research on specific issues
arrow undertaking special projects to enhance skills and knowledge in the social sector.

These initiatives are aimed at improving our knowledge and services to the ventures in our portfolio and the social sector more broadly.

The Research & Development Fund makes these learning, knowledge and research initiatives possible and provides outstanding opportunities for tailored program development and brand recognition for corporations.
